Mangal, Afghanistan 1988- He was a baker in Pakistan, an Afghan
refugee who had come to join the Jihad. We were just across the
Pakistani border and drove to this hilltop to drop off some passengers.
All of us jumped out of the Toyota 4X and I began to take pictures,
barely noticing a communications tent bristling with equipment
behind me. A man came out of the tent and began screaming protests
and orders. I guess he had some juice. We were thrown out of
Afghanistan that day. |
